Digital Photography & Imaging- Week 6

 LECTURES

Week 6: Poster Design

  • The principles of   design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition.
The 7 principles of poster design:
  • Emphasis
  • Balance and Alignment
  • Contrast: create space and difference between elements in your design.
  • Repetition
  • Proportion: The visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other.
  • Movement( create the story or the narrative of your work) and White Space( the empty page around the elements in your proposition)

TUTORIAL & PRACTICAL
  • This week, Mr. Asrizal introduced us to the content of Project 2 – Exercise 2. We were informed that we are required to participate in a design competition, and the outcome of this project will contribute to our assessment, accounting for 30% of our final grade.

The competition is organized by HONOR, and the task is to design a creative poster based on the theme provided by the brand. Our first step is to select one of the given themes, conduct in-depth research, and understand the core message and emotional intent behind it in order to guide our design process.

Additionally, we were assigned a fixed submission category: Magic Lock Screen. This means we are required to submit the poster design in two formats—square and vertical.

Task Assigned:
  • Create a poster design using elements of photography, typography and vector graphics.
  • Choose one theme and one category

PROGRESSION

  • The Theme I choose:

Renewal of life: Return Contemplate, human beings' relationship with all things.

  • The Category: Magic Lock Screen ( Square and vertical poster only)
RESEARCH OF THE TOPIC:
  • "Renewal of Life" is about the revival of life, the restoration of the environment, and the hope for a renewed connection between humans and nature.
  • "Return" means going back to our original, pure state—like nature, our inner self, and our true intentions.
  • "Contemplate" encourages us to think about how, in a fast-developing tech-driven world, we can live in harmony with nature, technology, and society.
  • The core message is to re-examine the relationship between human beings and all living things, and to find balance and harmony again.

 My Design Concept:
  • This poster, themed "Rebirth of Life," depicts a diver encountering a biomechanical sea turtle in the deep ocean. The turtle’s mechanical parts symbolize technology’s role in sustaining life, while the diver’s outstretched hand reflects humanity’s attempt to reconnect with nature. The serene underwater scene invites reflection on life, technology, and the future, echoing the contest theme “Return · Reflection.”

FEEDBACK
  • Mr. Asrizal mentioned that my overall work is fine, but my sketch needs to fit the official Magic Lock Screen size.
REFLECTION:
  • I found this competition to be a very challenging experience. With a heavy workload, participating in such a contest was both exciting and stressful. Fortunately, I had a clear concept from the start, so the drawing process was relatively smooth. Although I felt a bit tense at times, it pushed me to manage my time more effectively and focus on expressing my ideas through design.
