2. Recap of Task 3 brief

In this task, you need to create a design based on the idea proposed in Task 2, applying design principles to your work.

3. The Chosen Idea

IDEA 2: Adjust the focal point of the composition

Original Artwork:

Artist: Claude Monet
Published: 1869
Size: 60 x 73.5cm
Medium: Oil on canvas

Sketch from Task 2:

Idea #2

Reducing the visual weight on the right can prevent the composition from feeling too heavy or cluttered. Adding elements (boat) to the lower left corner helps balance the scene, guiding the viewer’s eye more naturally and making the overall composition more harmonious and visually engaging.

Development Application: Procreate ( water brush)
( Develop it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, positioning)

Development & Progression:

Development:

When I consulted online, I found that the visual weight of the trees on the right side of this painting is quite light, unlike the original image with heavy brushstrokes. This helps maintain the balance of the overall composition.

Progressions

#Progress 1

I imported the sketch into Procreate and referred to the color scheme from the sources above to ensure that the tree pile on the right does not appear too heavy, achieving overall visual balance.

# Color palette

I imported the image into the color palette to extract and export the needed colors.

#Progress 2

I first apply a background color to the background.

#Progress 3

Next, I used a water brush and a round brush to color the sky. I found this part quite challenging because the colors in the original image are somewhat complex, and I tried to replicate its color presentation. I used the smudge tool to blur the edges of the clouds to achieve hierarchy. I also added the bow of a boat in the lower left side to achieve overall compositional balance, aligning with the objective of my idea's title.

#Progress 4

For the trees, to avoid making them appear too heavy or dense, I first used a light purple base, then added a touch of dark purple for depth, along with some blue for variation. For the foliage, I used Snow Gum and Paper Daisy brushes to paint the leaves.

#Progress 5

#Progress 6

I first applied a base color to the house and then added shadows.

# Progress 7

The second most challenging part was the reflection in the water. I painted it based on the colors of the sky while ensuring it didn’t appear too complex. This step took a significant amount of time.

#Progress 8

For the boat section, I searched for "row of boats" on Pinterest as my reference.

#Progress 11

I added a Gaussian blur to the boats to prevent them from being too eye-catching and causing imbalance.

Finally, I added some reflections on the water surface and refined the details on the grass based on the original colors. I found this part very difficult because the details on the grass in the original image are very complex. I tried to restore them.

Improve design:

Based on Sir's suggestions, the first thing I improved was the sky. The original sky looked too harsh and unnatural, so I used edge blur to create a smoother transition, making the sunset look more natural. Second, I adjusted the boats by finding better references on Pinterest for new inspiration. Third, I worked on the grass to make it look more realistic. Finally, I refined the lake surface to improve its texture and avoid the rough look it had before.

6. Rationale Explaining:

  • The decisions made in your design.

This artwork mainly follows the second idea from Task 2, which is to adjust the focal point of the composition. In the original image, the brushstrokes on the trees on the right side were heavy, drawing too much attention. To create better balance, I softened the details on the right and added elements in the lower left corner to enhance the overall harmony. This adjustment helps guide the viewer’s eyes naturally toward the central area of the painting, making the composition more balanced and unified.

  • The meaning/ purpose of the design.

The purpose of this artwork is to adjust the focal point and make the composition more balanced and visually harmonious. By softening the details on the right and adding elements in the lower left corner, the scene feels more stable and natural. This change helps the viewer’s eyes move smoothly across the painting instead of focusing too much on one side. The goal is to enhance the depth of the scene and strengthen the connection between different elements.

  • The design principles that are employed  to create the design.

This artwork applies several design principles to create a balanced and visually appealing composition. Balance is achieved by adjusting the focal point, reducing details on the right side, and adding elements to the left to guide the viewer’s eye smoothly across the scene. Contrast is shown through the warm sunset tones against the cooler landscape, making the image more dynamic. Depth and perspective are enhanced by the boat in the foreground, leading the viewer into the scene. Unity is maintained through the harmony of colors and textures, creating a cohesive and immersive atmosphere.

FEEDBACK:

Week 6
Sir mentioned that the boat perspective in the lower left corner of my artwork looks too realistic, and the transition to the sky is not smooth enough, and the grass can be improved.
