Digital Photography & Imaging - Week 4

 WEEK 4

LECTURE

  • This week, Mr. Asrizal uploaded materials on Google Classroom about how to use adjustment layers and filters on layers.

  • Adjustment Layer

         - Group of a super useful, non- destructive editing tools.

         - allow user to edit and discard adjustments or restore original image any time.

         - This will make workflow in photoshop more flexible and efficient.
  • Types of adjustment layers available
         - Brightness / contrast: Adjusting highlights and shadows.
         - Level : Adjusting the levels of shadows, midtones, and highlights.
       - Curves: A powerful tool that lets you precisely adjust tones across the whole   image.
         - Exposure: Exposure for highlight, offset for midtones, gamma for dark tones.
         - Selective color: Selectively modifies the amount of color.
  • Filters in Photoshop are essential tools used to adjust color, add effects, and create various visual styles.

TUTORIAL

Task Assigned:
  • Use a photo of yourself to match lighting, apply adjustment layers, filters, and use the Photoshop Pen Tool.
  • The video that provided

Progress:

  • First, I uploaded my photo and followed the instructions from YouTube to remove the background. I found this part really fun and interesting. Also, after watching the three YouTube videos and practicing in Photoshop, I gradually got the hang of it and learned how to do it.

  • Add solid color

  • Trying to adjust the layer and add filters
Final Outcome:

PRACTICAL

Task Assigned:
  • Provided shazam and heart mansion material, utilize
         - quick selection tool
         - layer mask
         - filters
         - color correction

Progress:
PROJECT 1B PART 1 : SHAZAM

  • Using Quick Selection tool to cut out the background.
  • Import the heart mansion
  • Adjust Colour correction
           - Luminance: 107
           - Color intensity: 120
           - Fade: 49

  • Add Noise Filter: 9.51 to SHAZAM
  • I create a new layer for shadow, and use brush tool draw a black shadow of the background of SHAZAM  layer. After that, I apply gaussian blur to the shadow to make it more natural.
  • shadow and reflection in making.

PART 2: MY REFLECTION

  • During the shoot, I was constantly looking for well-lit and suitable scenes. Initially, I planned to shoot outdoors, but the lighting was too harsh and caused unwanted glare in the footage. As a result, I decided to move the shoot indoors.
  • The indoor setting had sufficient lighting, and the results turned out quite well. Throughout the process, I paid close attention to the camera angles and light sources, but managing them still felt rather complex for me.
  • In the end, I decided to use the following image for my reflection. The process behind it was the same as that of the Shazam Reflection.

REFLECTION:
  • This exercise was relatively easier for me because I already had some experience with Photoshop. However, through this Digital Imaging task, I came to realize just how crucial lighting is during the shooting process. In the past, I mostly focused on composition or post-editing, but now I understand that good lighting significantly enhances the overall quality and mood of an image. Trying to control the direction and intensity of light during the shoot was both refreshing and challenging for me, but it taught me a lot.
FINAL OUTCOME:
 Heart Mansion

Final work: SHAZAM'S

Final work: My reflection

PROJECT 1B: PART 2

Task Assigned:
  • Recoloring B&W photo that provided in google classroom
  • This task mainly involves completing Exercise 1 and Exercise 2. We need to perform image editing by colorizing a black and white photo. Exercise 2 is similar to Exercise 1, but we choose one preferred image from several provided options to work on.

EXERCISE 1:

  • I completed this assignment based on the instructions from Google Classroom and the video demo, mainly using the Quick Selection Tool and Select and Mask for image editing.

Provided picture:

PROGRESS:

  • First, I used the Marquee Tool to select the skin and hair areas, then copied and pasted the selection onto the B&W portrait.

  • I used the Eyedropper Tool to pick the colors and the Brush Tool to apply them.

  • Using the Select and Mask feature to create more precise layer masks helps overcome the limitations of brush strokes in sparse hair areas.

  • Apply solid color and select soft light

EXERCISE 2:

PROGRESS:
  • Sampling
        - The first step was to prepare the colors I needed. I searched on Pinterest for suitable skin tones                  and hair colors, and selected several tones that matched my needs.

Skin color

Hair color

Jeans color

  • The process behind same as exercise 1.
REFLECTION

To be honest, this assignment took me a lot of time. Although I have some basic knowledge of Photoshop, I spent a lot of time trying to understand the concepts behind these exercises—using color layers to blend into the image and create color effects. The process was quite complex because I had to work on different parts separately, such as hair, face, eyes, lips, and even earrings, repeating the same steps for each. The biggest challenge for me was achieving precise coloring, as some colors would spill over the boundaries or some areas were not colored accurately. To address this, I searched online for solutions to minimize these issues.

FINAL OUTCOME

EXERCISE 1

EXERCISE 2

I found that after practicing several times, I became more proficient and really enjoyed the process.
