Digital Photography & Imaging- Week 3

 WEEK 3

LECTURE

  • Mr. Fauzi taught us how to use Photoshop and some basic tools. These include the lasso tool, pen tool, and layering.
  1. Lasso Tool
  • Allow us to draw and pin point specific area from a photo.
  • Three Types of Lasso Tool: Lasso, Polygonal Lasso & Magnetic Lasso.
      2. Pen Tool
  • The Pen Tool is the most common tool used to create a path from scratch.

  • You add anchor points with the Pen Tool, and the way you drag while placing them affects the shape of the path.

     3. Layering
  • Different images stacked on top of each other.
  • Layers let you save all parts of your work in one file.

  • You can edit without changing the original image (non-destructive editing).

  • Layers hold extra content like adjustments or added images.

TUTORIAL AND PRACTICAL
Task Assigned
  • This week, we will start Project 1B. We need to download the given images and create three digital collages. We also have to consider the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio. We must use the tools we have learned, including blending modes, paths, masking, and layering.

  • The canvas must be set to A4 size in Photoshop. After finishing, we need to submit it to Google Classroom.

  • Deadline: 16/ 05/ 2025

Progress
  • At the beginning, I browsed Pinterest to find inspiration based on the theme, structure, and visual style I wanted.

  • I used the Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds grids from the download pack as guides to help me create better compositions.

  • I got inspiration from different templates on Pinterest and wanted to create a similar structure. However, I found it challenging because the provided elements were not very diverse.

  • Before this, I had learned a bit of Photoshop, so using the lasso tool was relatively easy for me. I initially planned to create a ray effect and place buildings on it, based on what I had researched. However, it didn’t look good, so I changed it to a fighting fish swimming under the ray effect instead.

  • Using lasso tool to create the eyes of 'moon'.
  • I really like the colors of this element because it help highlight my theme.

  • For the second design, I originally used a blue fish as the main subject and placed a door in the center to represent a path. However, I felt it looked a bit too plain, so I decided to graft the head of one fighting fish onto the body of the blue fighting fish.

  • I used the lasso tool to crop out the heads and the rear parts of the two fish separately.

  • I’m trying to use the lasso tool to separate the train from the nearby sidewalk and extract parts of the people. It really requires a lot of patience.

  • The black element in the back represents the "sun," while the curved, radiating elements nearby symbolize the rays of light refracted from the sun.

🎨 Final  Digital Collage🎨

# 1 Design

Based on the inspiration I found on Pinterest, my design concept is to have the fish swim out of the camera under the moonlight, while the buildings on the moon symbolize the "city" on the moon.

# 2 Design

The focus of the design starts with the person walking out of the door, expanding outward from the center and forming a ray-like effect that leads to the crowd and scene at the train platform.

# 3 Design

This collage centers around the modern building slightly to the right of the middle. For each element, I tried to create a sense of visual disconnection, giving the feeling of spatial displacement.

REFLECTION
  • Although I became more familiar with the lasso and pen tools and really enjoyed the design process, I think the most challenging part was the composition. Even though I had Pinterest, the Rule of Thirds, and the Golden Ratio as guides, I still felt lost when it came to arranging the layout. Composition felt complex, and I wasn’t sure how to bring all the elements together into one structure. Luckily, the final result turned out decent.
