REFLECTION

Experience

Typography was the first module I took in my minor, and as someone new to the field, much of the content was fresh and intriguing. Before starting the course, I never imagined there could be so much to learn about letters, which I found both fascinating and enjoyable. Although the module was time-consuming, I enjoyed every part of the learning process. Each project offered valuable insights, and with every task completed, I noticed improvements in my skills and experience, which I could apply to my daily life to enhance the quality of my work. I believe that learning new skills is the best way to secure my future. The weekly feedback I received from my lecturer, Ms Vitiyaa, was incredibly helpful, especially in refining the finer details of my designs. Her guidance kept me on track throughout the 14 weeks, ensuring I understood the objectives and the right approach for each project. I also appreciated having the freedom to express my individuality and unique design style. Overall, this module has been very beneficial, and I am grateful for every learning opportunity. The Typography knowledge I gained will undoubtedly play a crucial role in my future career.

Observations

What I observed in this module is that, although I might have felt completely overwhelmed at the beginning—especially since it was my first time encountering this module—I was even anxious at the start of the semester, worrying that I wouldn’t do well. However, by Week 13, I realized that despite the pressure and anxiety, I managed to complete all the tasks that needed to be done. Along the way, I also learned a lot. Before I knew it, the semester was almost over.

In this module, I really gained so much knowledge. I think the most interesting part of the semester was text formatting. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of formatting text. Even though these are foundational concepts, I never imagined there could be so much to learn just about letters alone.

Findings

From this module, I gained experience with Ai, ID, Photoshop, and Fontlab. Thanks to this module, I felt much less lost in IVN since the knowledge I learned here could also be applied there. After completing the entire module, I realized that typography is very detail-oriented, such as in text formatting. I thoroughly enjoyed the process because it is an art. Although it’s time-consuming, I always feel a great sense of accomplishment after completing a task. While it can be stressful at times, I have truly gained a lot from this experience.
